My journey into the beauty world began as a child…

I remember spending countless hours in front of the mirror, analyzing my face and hair - trying to figure out different concoctions of natural skin and hair remedies. Learning how to embrace my Indian features was a big part of my childhood. In my struggle to love my brown skin and curly/frizzy hair, I would stop to look at anything that was related to beauty and fashion. Whether it was the latest magazine at the dentist’s office or watching “Say Yes To The Dress”, I was hooked. It wasn’t long until I fell in love with fashion, beauty, and anything related to art. I used to draw dresses and gowns on notebook paper and said “fashion is my passion” to anyone who asked what I wanted to be when I grew up.

In the summer of 2014, I began doing henna as a small side business. I created HennaByJoan as a platform to display my craft. Within the next year and a half, I added hair and makeup to my services. While developing my business and broadening my clientele, I worked in cosmetics with brands like Lancôme and Chanel. Through this experience, I was able to expand my product knowledge and gain experience working with clients with various needs. At the same time, I learned the art of saree draping and added that my list of offered services.

When I graduated with a Bachelors in Business Entrepreneurship, I took the next step in my career and became a certified makeup artist. Once I the a completed the certification program, I took up BeautyByJLis full time and the rest was history.

My struggle to love and embrace my skin and hair eventually became the fuel to my passion and art, BeautyByJLis. Through BeautyByJLis, I am able to express my creative side and help my clients feel even more beautiful. Whether it’s a small party or their big day, I’m glad to be a part of it.
